EuroVelo network to expand: Sava Cycle Route becomes a candidate EuroVelo route

jeudi 23 octobre 2025
The European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF) is pleased to announce the next proposed EuroVelo route: the Sava Cycle Route, set to become EuroVelo 18. The route will connect Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia, linking three European capitals (Ljubljana, Zagreb and Belgrade) along the course of the Sava River. The route is expected to be officially integrated into the EuroVelo network by 2029, provided it meets the criteria for new EuroVelo routes.

Spanning 1,136 kilometres, the Sava Cycle Route will offer cyclists a unique experience through diverse landscapes – from the Alpine region to the Pannonian Plain – and will showcase some of Europe’s most significant natural wetlands, cultural heritage sites, and rural communities.

The route begins at the river’s source in Slovenia and passes through Triglav National Park, Lake Bled, Ljubljana (which is already crossed by EuroVelo 9 – Baltic-Adriatic), and continues into Croatia via Zagreb, Sisak, and Lonjsko Polje Nature Park, a Ramsar-listed wetland and home to Čigoć, the first European stork village. Further along, the route reaches Slavonski Brod, then enters Bosnia and Herzegovina, passing through Bijeljina, Brčko, and the Bardača wetlands, before continuing into Serbia. There, cyclists will explore Sremska Mitrovica, Zasavica and Obedska Bara, two internationally important wetland areas, before arriving in Belgrade, where the route connects with EuroVelo 6 - Atlantic-Black Sea, EuroVelo 11 – East Europe Route and EuroVelo 13 – Iron Curtain Trail.

The Sava Cycle Route is the result of a strong cross-border collaboration between national and regional stakeholders, including ministries, tourism boards and NGOs, and in particular National EuroVelo Coordination Centres. In Slovenia, the route is coordinated by the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Energy, in Croatia by the Ministry of Tourism and Sport, in Bosnia and Herzegovina by the Center for Environment, and in Serbia by the Danube Competence Center. The development of the future EuroVelo 18 is supported by all the regions the route crosses.

This project marks a significant step in expanding the EuroVelo network into Bosnia and Herzegovina, strengthens sustainable mobility and tourism across Southeast Europe, and will be well-integrated with other cycle route networks as a strategic corridor. The Sava Cycle Route will not only connect countries and cities, but also promote regional development, environmental awareness, active mobility and sustainable tourism. The Sava Cycle Route will become the nineteenth route of the EuroVelo network at the latest by 2029, provided that a set of criteria according to the European Certification Standard are met.
